To be able to do anything, or go anywhere with a competence, first you need to have a sense of it. This is true for individuals, teams and even organisations. The focus on the sense of worth and the world of possibility of a competence is key behind the term "valuing" competence. In a world so preoccupied by "managing" competence and performance, it is good to get back to the this essential prerequisite.
Competence versus competency? We choose to use the form competence to reflect that for us a competence is not something you tick off a list, but rather a something that is larger and more complex that can continue developing all your life. Your can acquire a skill but you "develop" competence".
