Collaborative work methods

Todays working world cannot continue successfuly with the traditional working methods which it has been working with. The type of work, the complexity, the speed of change, the distributed supply chains and team players, will eventually be bringing  successful organisations to a new work culture grounded in collaborative working methods and tools. We speak of a "work culture" because collaborative work processes can cause a certain level of discomfort for those used to having the large end of the stick when it came to holding key information and files. The openness, flow, transparency and trust inherent in collaborative work methods can be disconcerting for some.

Collaborative work methods are in line with the open-ended, participatory dialogue, and chaotic appearing processes necessary for innovation. So too are they appropriate for bringing together in rigorous fashion the vast and diverse expertise and know-how spread throughout an organisation or service.  Organisations of today should all be engaged in builiding their collaborative capacity.

The technological tool used to support a collaborative process needs to be chosen based on different factors:

  • if the content is evolving or final,
  • if the interest is short or long term,
  • if the contributors are few or many.
